FAQ Saunas

Care and maintenance related questions

Clean your sauna often to keep it fresh and well maintained.

Sweep or vacuum your sauna periodically to remove dirt, hair, etc.

Wipe down the walls where people have touched them, i.e. above benches, around doors and controls as needed.

Use a humid and clean cloth or sponge to clean sweat spots. It is important to note that the more you use water to clean your iComfort sauna the more your sauna will change colour. Using water might contribute your sauna to develop small cracks. Using a towel to dry off any excess humidity will help to prevent this.

Avoid heavy detergents as they can discolour your iComfot sauna or leave a residue, which could emit irritating or harmful fumes.

Never hose down the interior or exterior of an infrared sauna.

Never apply paint, stain or other chemical finishes or sealants to the interior of your sauna. The heat from your infrared sauna may cause the surface to become too hot to the touch and/or cause toxic fumes to be released.

Yes, however the mild colour change will be dependent on where and how frequently you use your sauna. For this, make sure your sauna does not face direct sun light and is in a well ventilated area with little temperature variations. This will insure your iComfort saunas wood colour to change very little over time and also help to prevent it from developing small cracks.

iComfort saunas are certified for indoor use only.

Electrical related questions

Most iComfort Saunas are designed to plug into a standard household wall outlet rated at 120 Volt/15 amps. Some of our 3 and 4 person saunas require a dedicated 120 Volt/20 amp outlet. We recommend that you hire a licensed electrician to install a dedicated wall outlet with our 120V/20 Amp models.

We carry cETL, CE approved electrical safety certifications on all of our saunas.

Most electrical Utility rates in Canada are between .05$ to .14$ per 1000 Watts, per hour. Therefore, it will cost you only from $0.07 to $0.21 per session for a 1, 2 or 3 person sauna for 45 minutes including warm-up time.

Installation related questions

The installation of an iComfort sauna was designed to be quick and easy with minimal tools required. Our step by step, illustrated Installation Manual can be printed right from our site: www.icomfort.ca. Of course, you always have the option of hiring someone to install your sauna for you.

It really depends on you. The one person is great if you have space limitations. The 2 person gives you enough room to move around and change positions without getting too cramped and is big enough for 2 people as well. The 3 person or corner unit gives you more room to stretch out and is more suitable if 2 people will be using it most of the time. It is best not to lay down in an infrared sauna because the way the heaters are positioned you will get the most benefits by sitting upright.

Our saunas come in either 2 or 3 boxes and vary accordingly in size and weight. Please refer to our specification section and look for the model you are looking for.

Our 4 person models require a dedicated 120 Volt/20 amp outlet. We recommend that you hire a licensed electrician to install a dedicated outlet for these models.

Usage related questions

Our saunas are designed and certified for indoor use only.

Wikipedia says Bikram yoga classes are ideally set at 105 F. Infrared sauna heaters in infrared saunas can be set from 120F to 140 F (43 to 54 C).

Avoid heavy detergents as they can discolour your wood or leave a residue or emit irritating or harmful fumes.

Use water as little as possible to clean the sauna as the wood will tend to turn dark over time and may develop small cracks.

Never hose down the interior or exterior of an infrared sauna.

Never apply paint, stain or other chemical finishes or sealants to the interior of your sauna. The heat from your infrared sauna may cause the surface to become too hot to the touch or cause toxic fumes to be released.

No, all you need is a wall outlet to plug into. The sauna never gets hot on the outside because of the double wall construction so you can put it flush to the wall. The only place you need some breathing room is on top as this is where the air vent, electronics, and fan are. You need at least 2″ clearance above the sauna. You can put the sauna on any type of flooring.

iComfort saunas are certified for indoor use only.

Yes, to receive constant infrared heat using your iComfort sauna; simply adjust the digital controller to the maximum temperature. You can also open the trap inside your sauna. During a 30 to 45 minute heating session, the infrared elements will emit 100% of infrared heat, without intermission.

1) It is recommended to wear minimal clothing in the sauna as some clothing materials absorb the infrared rays and nullify its effectiveness.

2) Before sitting or reclining in the sauna, place a towel underneath you for added cushioning and to absorb perspiration. It will also protect your sauna for the long term.

3) Since the key to infrared therapy is heating your body core temperature, you will find that you sweat more sitting up in the sauna with your back lined up with the back wall heaters heating your body core from the back. This positions you in such a way that the large side wall heaters will be heating the front of your body.

3) During your session the temperature inside the sauna will slowly climb. Remember, your iComfort infrared sauna is heating your body more so than heating the air around you.

4) Turn your sauna on and set the controller at your desired temperature. It should take about 15-30 minutes to reach that temperature depending on the ambient room temperature.

5) To help regulate the ideal temperature inside the sauna you can use the roof ventilation trap. This will evacuate heat faster.

6) If you feel the need for more cooling, simply leave the door open until the air around you feels comfortable enough.

7) Drink plenty of fluids prior to, during, and after your session. Stay well hydrated. It is estimated that 70% of people are dehydrated during a sauna session. When you are dehydrated, your body holds on to water and will not allow you to sweat very much. The longer you stay in it, the more water you should drink.

8) Towel off excess sweat during your session to help the body perspire more freely.

9) Using lotions or oils on the body or face when using the sauna may block skin pores and hinder perspiration.

10) Shaving your face or legs with a razor while sweating profusely in your iComfort sauna yields an incredibly smooth result without the use of gels or foams.

11) To make the most out of your session, work your muscles while in the saunas. Stretch your arms and legs, massage your neck, massage your feet, etc.

12) You can benefit from the relaxing and soothing effects of a regular sauna session by going to sleep afterwards. The peaceful and relaxed state rendered by a sauna session will help you to sleep easier and better.

13) After the session is over, do not immediately jump into the shower. Since your body was heated up during the session, it will continue to sweat even after the heaters off. Sit in the sauna with the door open and let your body cool off. Once you feel comfortable enough, take a warm (or cool) shower to rinse the perspiration off your body.

Although not necessary, it is a good idea to take a hot shower prior to entering the sauna. This will help you to sweat more quickly.

Before sitting or reclining in the sauna, place a towel underneath you to absorb perspiration. It will also protect your sauna for the long term.

Technology related questions

Many iComfort massage chair use state-of-the-art scan technology to detect pressure points and tailor the massage to fit your body and needs. Our massage technology mimics massage therapists with random variations of pressure and motion to stimulate specific pressure points through kneading, tapping and pressing. Some iComfort massage chairs even feature a synchronized music program integrating music with massage to achieve a higher level of mental and physical relaxation. To sum up, our lineup is one the marketplaces largest. Surely, you will find the perfect model and features to suit you.

Yes. There are four ways to adjust the intensity of a massage:

1) The automatic mode: Some of our models have many automatic massage modes which vary the intensity of the massage.

2) The manual mode: You can manually adjust the massage intensity

3) You can vary the massage intensity by reclining the massage chair. The more it is reclined, the more intense it will be. This is because your weight is more horizontally concentrated on the massage chair rollers.

4) You can also remove some padding on the back rest cushion.

Body scanning technology allows the massage chair to actually customize its program for each individual. The chair is equipped with software that allows the roller arms to sense where the neck begins and the lower back ends. The chair then automatically adjusts to accommodate different body types.

Yes! We have several massage chair models with heating elements.

The reclining angles of our massage chairs vary between 115 -175 (180 degrees means a completely flat surface). Therefore, when fully descending the chairs’ backrest – the user will be laying back on an almost flat surface. If reclining to an almost horizontal position is important to you, we recommend checking on our product specification sheets to decide which model suits you best.

The massage stroke is the distance on your back that the massage mechanism will cover. The longer the stroke, the more of your back will be massaged. Some of our chairs have massage strokes of 29 inches or more, which is plenty long for almost everybody. Some chairs have strokes as short as 20 inches, which is fine if you’re looking for a lower back massage and not a full treatment. Having a long massage stroke also means the massage chair is able to cover the neck area more effectively.

Generally, the stronger massage strength your chair has, the better, as long as you are able to add padding to soften the contact. Once your body adjusts to a stronger massage, you will enjoy being able to take off the pads and allow the massage to really work deeply. Of course, you can also adjust the massage strength manually on many of our models.

The rollers provide the massage on your back, as they move up and down. Four rollers would be customary for better chairs, although some lower-end chairs offer as few as two. Some iComfort massage chairs offer up to six rollers. The best thing to do is to try them to find out whats best for you.

Generally, a motor will be assigned to each function in a massage chair. That allows each function to be fully-powered. The strength of a massage is dependent on the number and power of the motors, so generally, it is better to have more motors.

Most iComfort massage chairs offer a timer and allow massages in various time increments. All of them will stop after a programmed amount of time.

Rolling is the massage chair function in which the rollers roll up and down your back and massage the muscles most likely to need relaxation.

Kneading is the function that accomplishes most closely what a massage therapist would do, and that is to knead the muscles much like a baker would knead a loaf of bread. It relaxes the muscles more thoroughly than a more simple rolling massage.

Tapping also allows for more thorough relaxation. The chair accomplishes this by tapping on different portions of your back with the rollers, the way a massage therapist would. You’re in for a treat when you find out how nice this function feels!

Some of our massage chairs also have kneading and tapping at the same time. This is a very nice feature to help your massage to be even more effective.

Because people are not all the same size, you want to be able to adjust the width of the rollers. Some of our models provide for three width adjustment. Some models even measure the spinal cord and with this determine the massage roller width. Of course, this can be done manually at any time on many models.

Delivering heat to your back during a massage can help relax your muscles. Some of our models have heat for the back and/or the seat area and/or the legs. Some others offer a hand held infrared heater to put the heat where it is really needed.

Air bag massage (pressure therapy) functions by delivering air to small air bags on certain areas of the chair. The inflated airbags compress the muscles of the seat area much like a Swedish massage. This type of massage can be very relaxing, and is available on some of our models. Some of our chairs can even deliver the air bag massage at the same time as rolling, kneading and tapping.

Vibration provides relaxing movement on a small scale to the entire body and it adds great value to a massage chair. Many of our models offer this feature.

Most of our massage chairs offer pre-programmed routines for massage. For example, a chair might deliver kneading, tapping, and rolling for ten minutes and then vibration for five. Following that, you might have leg massage for five minutes. We encourage you to explore the automated programs on iComfort massage chairs and determine what you like best!

Many of our models do. Leg and foot massage can be delivered either by air bag, vibration and rollers. Air bags can be very relaxing and tend to give a fuller massage for all types of legs and feet. Rollers are ideal to massage under the feet. Check on our model specification section and look for these features.

Many of our models do. Vibration massage can be very relaxing.

Some of our models do. With an iComfort massage chair with extendable articulated footrest, you really are in heaven. With this feature, the footrest can be raised, articulated and extended to allow for added comfort and support. It can also be lengthened or shortened to adjust for various leg lengths. This feature is in our view necessary for people over 510. Some companies offer models with extendable footrests only. This means tall people will not be able to incline completely the foot rest and enjoy the full benefits of a zero gravity massage.

Yes. The more motors a chair has, the less stress will be placed on each motor. This helps to extend the life of the machine, by spreading the workload out over several different motors.

With this feature, your massage chair can return to its original position. Some chairs require you to continue pressing on a button until you reach the fully-reclined (or fully-upright) position. Some iComfort massage chairs have this feature.

Many of our models do. With this feature you do not need handles to mechanically adjust the incline of the massage chair. The touch of a button is all that is required.

Most iComfort massage chairs are covered with a tough, resilient and long lasting faux leather finish. It is virtually maintenance free and will withstand the rigors of a frequently used massage chair much better than leather. Many of our top of the line massage chairs are equipped with a four roller massage system that provides a very deep shiatsu style massage. Normal leather cannot withstand the prolonged use of the rollers and will eventually crack. Synthetic leather has elasticity that will allow it to stretch with the deep massage motion of the rollers and return to its original shape. Our covering has been proven to be very durable, allowing it to maintain its look longer than normal leather and is virtually maintenance free. This material does not need to be conditioned, treated or moisturized and can be cleaned easily.

Some of our models do. If you plan to use a massage chair with rollers on a regular basis it is best to purchase a chair with high-quality stretchable synthetic leather. This makes the chair more durable and easier to clean.

Yes they do. Adding or removing cushions to a massage chair allows you to choose the comfort you desire. For chairs with mechanical rollers, this is an important feature.

Some of our massage chairs use a body scanning technology which allows the massage chair to adjust the massage rollers to the persons size. These massage chair allow the roller arms to sense where the lower back starts and the neck ends. The chair then automatically adjusts to accommodate different body types.

iComfort is synonymous with quality, reliability and style. We are known for our integration of advanced technology that exceeds the expectations of even the most discriminating consumers. Most of our chairs adjust to users specific body types, sensitivities and needs to deliver comfort and relief to the areas of the body that need it most.

Some of our massage chairs use a body scanning technology which allows the massage chair to adjust the massage rollers to the persons size. These massage chair allow the roller arms to sense where the lower back starts and the neck ends. The chair then automatically adjusts to accommodate different body types.

We get asked about massage chairs by many different names. There are many synonyms for massage chairs out in the marketplace today. Some common synonyms are: massage recliners, massage chairs, therapeutic chairs, robotic massage chairs, electric massage chairs, etc. These are just various names of the same product category. Just like any product, it may be known by other names. It’s not important if a massage chair is called a massage recliner or robotic massage chair. The real issue is: what are the important massage features and how good it is for you.

Owning the right massage chair can bring many healthy benefits to you. Our massage chairs are designed and created to simulate both the touch and pressure of a massage therapist and to achieve the health benefits of massage therapy.

Usage related questions

It is best to purchase a chair with high-quality stretchable synthetic leather. This makes the chair more durable and easier to clean. We use high quality rollers for many of our chairs. These rollers push, spread and pulls on the chair tissue. Top quality synthetic leather, when spread comes back to its original form. Over the years, even very good quality leather will tend to crack.

Please refer to our products section and find the massage chair you want.

Most iComfort massage chairs have this feature. Adding cushions to a massage chair allows you to soften a massage without giving up the option of a very strong massage (by using thinner pads). For chairs with mechanical rollers, this is an important feature.

Massage chairs use a respectable amount of room, which is why they are most often in the bedroom or in the home office. Discuss it with others who share the same space with you to be sure it also works for them.

If you’d like a massage chair that reclines, you won’t be able to position the back of the massage chair close to a wall. Measure the space you have in mind before selecting a chair. A massage chair salesperson should be able to tell you how much room you need for the massage chair to recline all the way, and whether the particular model you’re interested in will work in your space.

Most iComfort massage chairs have wheels, so it can be moved from room to room or out of sight. This makes them ideal for people who don’t mind a massage chair in their living room, but want to be able to move it out of the way when company comes.

iComfort massage chairs are designed for different peoples sizes. It is important to give the massage chair a test drive before you buy. For instance, if you are 5′-3″ and want a model with rollers choose one with the auto-scan feature. This will adjust the rollers travel to your height by sensing where the top of your shoulders and your lower back are. Some iComfort massage chairs can accommodate people over 65  with the extendable leg rest feature. Regarding people weight, some of our models are designed for people over 300 pounds.

Each person who will be using the massage chair should check that the height of the seat of the massage chair is comfortable. Some massage chair seats are quite low to the ground, which may be uncomfortable for people 6′-0″ and over, or people with knee, hip, or low back pain.

iComfort massage chairs range from about $500 to $6,000. But don’t just rely on price to gauge quality, and don’t feel that you have to buy at the top of the price range to get a quality massage chair. Not everyone needs all the features of the higher-priced models. It’s a matter of finding the right massage chair for you at the right price and iComfort offers one of the broadest lines of massage chairs.

Massage chairs usually require very little assembly. Some chairs are shipped in two pieces so that the boxes are more manageable. Assembly is generally a five to twenty minute process that usually won’t even require special tools.

Most iComfort massage chairs are equipped with wheels that make them easy to move from room to room.

We recommend that iComfort massage chairs be given a rest after about an hour to avoid overheating although very rare and unusual.

Stroke length describes the distance covered by the massage roller mechanisms of the chair. The longer the stroke length, the higher the massage rollers will reach on the back and neck area.

It really depends on the model. The most important thing to remember about a massage chair is that it is a tool designed to do a specific job. Because massage chairs are designed primarily to give a massage, many high end iComfort massage chairs have many moving parts and they tend to have very thin upholstery by necessity. With thicker upholstery you wouldn’t be able to feel the massage as much. Some iComfort massage chairs, however, are better than others when it comes to comfort. Some of them, when the massage hands are not in use, store them in the neck region behind a generous pillow. Others even have a removable pillow. This is why some high end iComfort massage chair are not only great massagers but also remarkably comfortable.

We use only the finest materials and the highest-quality internal mechanics in the construction of our massage chairs. If anything goes wrong, we have one of the best warranty and support service for you.
